Significant risk of movement

A phrase first used jokingly about a wobbly carpet, later borrowed in deadly earnest from a house survey report that scuppered a purchase, and forever after applied to anything unstable — Gary's water bowl, joint insurance, boilers, arguments.

The full Skye

Shorthand for their worst-ever disaster, a stranded campervan trip in the rain on Skye, used ever after as the benchmark against which all other catastrophes (sofas, interviews, holidays) are measured, usually as a percentage.

Gary the plant / Gary the dog

Freya's flagging houseplant Gary, prone to dramatic 'wall staring', gets a namesake in the rescue dog that joins them later — cue years of debate over renaming him Kevin or Bramble, which never actually happens.

Quiz Boy

Owen's nickname from the pub quiz where they met, revived for years afterward including a whole team named 'Quiz Boy Privileges'.

Cant talk gary needs a wee

Freya's all-purpose exit line, used to duck out of conversations regardless of whether Gary (plant or dog) actually needs anything.

Eleven mugs

An ongoing dispute over how many mugs Owen owns and hoards, never fully resolved.

Fern

Owen's adopted nickname from Freya, origin explained mid-lockdown and used affectionately ever since.

Quiz Night Beginnings

January 2020 – February 2020

It started, as these things sometimes do, with an argument about a flag question. Freya was right, Owen was wrong, and neither of them let it go — not that night, and not for years afterwards. What began as a rematch and a reluctant invitation turned, somewhere between chip shops and pizza toppings, into something neither of them was supposed to be looking for.

This chapter follows those first weeks: the teasing that never quite stopped, the nickname that stuck, and Gary the plant, staring at his wall, getting drafted in as judge of everything from pineapple to good taste itself.

Burkina Faso, Not Mali

The night they met, over a flag question Owen got wrong and never fully accepted losing.

Freya

Freya

Owen

We were absolutely robbed on the music round. That wasn't even fair.

Owen

The quiz master had a vendetta. I'm convinced of it.

Owen

Exactly. He saw 'The Alternative Facts' on the sheet and decided we were a threat. Pre-emptive strike.

Freya

we won by eight points lol

Exactly my point. You're naturally talented at quizzes. I inherited your genes or something and clearly got a faulty batch.

The Confession That Named Him

That same night, Owen owned up to something about the flag question — and earned himself a nickname that never went away.

Owen

Right, I need to confess something about tonight.

Owen

What? No! God, no. It's about the flag question.

Freya

ohhh you googled it

Freya

I did NOT— well, I mean, yes, but only afterwards! I was curious. Everyone was arguing about it.

Purely For the Rematch

Owen tried asking Freya out properly. It didn't go entirely to plan.

Owen

So, fancy doing the quiz again on Wednesday? Purely for the rematch, you understand. Can't let you have the last laugh.

Freya

i might already be going

Freya

no big deal tho

Owen

You might already be going? To the quiz? On Wednesday?

Freya

yeah with some people from work

Owen

Right, so I've just asked you out and you were already going with other people. That's brilliant. That's really great actually.

Freya

you can still come tho 😭

Owen

I suppose that would work. Cheers for the enthusiastic invite, by the way. I can feel how much you wanted to tell me about this.

Not Looking For Anything Serious

An ordinary evening of Gary staring at the wall turned into a careful, sideways sort of conversation about what they weren't looking for.

Freya

gary has been staring at the same spot on the wall for like 20 mins

Freya

i think hes just broken

Freya

anyway not really looking for anything serious right now you know

Owen

I mean same honestly. The quiz was fun but I'm not trying to get into anything heavy at the moment.

Right, I need to settle something once and for all.

Owen

Nothing! Well. Pineapple on pizza. Does it belong?

Owen

You like barbecue sauce on pizza. BBQ sauce is sweet.

So is pineapple when it caramelises on the pizza.

Lockdown and Banana Bread

February 2020 – May 2020

Spring arrived, and with it a pub quiz gone slightly sideways, a scoreboard mix-up, and joint third place that neither of them minded too much. Within weeks the world had changed entirely, and what began as weekend dates became nightly calls at eight o'clock sharp, non-negotiable, together but apart.

In between the Zoom calls and the stir-craziness there was a plant called Gary staring dolefully at a pigeon, a biscuit cupboard rated to the decimal, and a banana bread that took four attempts and several ruined tins before it finally rose. Somewhere in the middle of all that, a joke about a fern became a name that stuck, and one evening in May, tentatively and then not tentatively at all, they said the big thing out loud.

A Window, Two Tin Cans, and the Big One

With something grim looming, they measured it the only way they knew how — against Skye.

Owen

Well. That was grim. Reckon we're about to find out if our relationship can survive a window and two tin cans for a date.

Freya

already washed the tin cans

Owen

It did actually. Well played. Though I'm now genuinely terrified about what comes next. They're calling it the Big One.

Freya

One evening, mid-lockdown, Freya asked the question that had been sitting under everything, and Owen took his time before answering it properly.

Moving In: Wilbraham Road

May 2020 – August 2020

Spring turned into summer and the rules finally loosened enough to let them sit outside together, two metres apart, in a park instead of a screen. From there things moved quickly — a ring mentioned mid-sentence, a flat found, a flat rejected, and then a real one, with a van and a sofa that nearly finished them both off.

By August they were properly living together on Wilbraham Road, arguing about mugs before the boxes were even unpacked. It was messier and slower than either of them probably imagined, but it was also, finally, real.

When the rules changed to allow outdoor meetings, Owen wasted no time putting a plan to Freya.

Owen

Owen

The rules changed today, didn't they? We can sit two metres apart as long as we're outside. I'm not mad, I genuinely think we could do this. x

Books, a Wobble, and Gary Arrives

August 2020 – May 2021

This stretch of the chat opens with boxes everywhere — three months of waiting finally over, and Freya's books flooding into a flat that was already, by Owen's own admission, a bit of a squeeze. What followed was a season of working out how two lives actually fit into one space: a shelf reorganised out of spite, three shelves of mugs put on trial, and one difficult night in October when the joke about a wobbly carpet stopped being funny for a moment and became something they had to talk through properly.

By December there was a dog. Gary the plant had already given the household its favourite bit of drama, and now Gary the dog arrived to double it — scruffy-eared, sock-eating, endlessly renamed and never actually renamed at all. From there the flat-hunting began in earnest, with viewings scored in Garys, boilers measured in Skyes, and a fire escape mistaken for a garden. It ends, fittingly, with a yes.

Significant Risk of Movement

May 2021 – December 2021

It began, as these things do, with a wobbly carpet and a laugh — and then, in June, with a surveyor who took four hours and a voicemail that gave nothing away. What followed was three exact words, read out in a voice note, that would outlast the flat they described and attach themselves to everything unstable in the years to come: a kitchen wall, a boiler, a bad Tuesday.

The purchase that should have been straightforward wasn't. It cracked, was patched with a number, then cracked again for good. In between, Gary destroyed a doorstop, survived an ear infection, and the flat-hunt dragged into a grey autumn with nothing to show for it. By November, tired and outvoted by the weather, Freya and Owen called a truce and put the whole search down until spring.

The report arrived, and Owen read the good bits aloud.

Right, the survey report's just come through. Let me read you the good bits.

Freya

Owen

'Significant risk of movement.' Yeah. Not great.

£8,500, or Walk Away

The call with Karen turned the survey's words into a decision with a deadline.

Owen

Right, just got off the phone with Karen. Not great news I'm afraid.

Owen

The vendor's refused to fund the remedial works. Flatly refused.

Owen

"Significant risk of movement." Those exact words.

Freya

YES significant risk of movement

Owen

We can either drop the price by the repair estimate, or walk away. Those are literally the only two options Karen said she'd put to them.

Owen

£8,500. Maybe more when the actual work gets quoted.

The Sinking Ship (Affectionately)

Rather than fight the flat's flaws any longer, they gave in and named them.

Owen

So I've been thinking. What if we just accept that Wilbraham Road is fundamentally sinking and lean into it? Rename the place 'The Sinking Ship (Affectionately)' and call it a day.

Freya

literally genius

Owen

I mean the significant risk of movement has really become part of its charm, hasn't it?

Pause Till Spring

After a grey autumn of viewings, a truce was finally reached.

Owen

So I was thinking, now that we're into November, we should probably have a proper chat about the flat situation. What are your thoughts on pressing on through winter or taking a breather? x

Freya

i cant do another viewing in this weather

Freya

every single one smells like wet carpet and sadness

Owen

That's fair. The autumn ones were miserable enough. Every place we've looked at seems to have significant risk of movement anyway.

Freya

i vote we just stop

Freya

no more viewings till march i mean it

Owen

Right, I'll believe that when I see it. You said the same thing in September and we somehow ended up in Clapham the following weekend.

Okay. Spring it is. We'll revisit in March when the world doesn't look quite so grey. Fair enough? x

The Long Middle

December 2021 – January 2023

Between the big milestones came the ordinary stretch — the one that doesn't get a headline but somehow holds everything together. Ready three days early, mentally packed at the last minute, flats scored out of ten in a currency only they understood, and Gary presiding over it all from whichever cushion he'd claimed that week.

The centrepiece of this stretch was a trip north with Bessie the campervan, which went wrong in almost every way it's possible for a trip to go wrong — missed ferries, a dead engine, a hat lost to livestock — and somehow became one of the stories they'd tell for years. Not a full Skye, they kept insisting. Getting there, though.

Redundancy and Regrouping

January 2023 – May 2023

It happened on an ordinary Friday afternoon, in a car park, over a phrase that would sound almost bureaucratic in the retelling — restructuring — and nothing about the months that followed was ordinary. Owen came home, and Freya came home to him, with chips and curry sauce and a dog who was, by his own admission, not built for anything except being perfect.

What followed was a slow, patient stretch: CVs dusted off, applications sent in bursts of eleven, interviews good and dreadful, rent quietly handled without asking permission. Through it all, the old jokes kept doing their work — Gary, the water bowl, the full Skye — right up until a phrase born from a wobbly carpet and a house survey somehow found its way into an actual interview room.

The Offer and the Proposal

May 2023 – September 2023

Summer opened with a phone call the two of them had been dreading and hoping for in equal measure. The mortgage broker rang back, the numbers finally worked, and a house with a tall bathroom and a garden for a plant called Gary went from daydream to paperwork almost overnight.

Then, on an ordinary evening walk with the actual Gary, the dog, Owen had one more piece of news to deliver — though this time he needed a bit of help from the towpath, a bench, and, unhelpfully, Gary himself.

A Scare Kept Quiet

September 2023 – January 2024

The new year opened quietly enough — Gary knocking over his water bowl, the same argument about renaming him Kevin that resurfaces every January. Underneath the familiar jokes, though, something had shifted. Freya kept saying she was fine, kept saying she was tired, kept finding reasons to end conversations early, and Owen kept noticing without quite being able to name what he was noticing.

It took until the middle of January for the truth to surface: a lump found in November, a biopsy in early January, and weeks of silence carried alone so that Christmas could stay Christmas. What follows is the story of that fortnight — the telling, the waiting, the relief, and the promise the two of them made afterwards never to do it that way again.

Building Up to the Barn

January 2024 – December 2024

This was the year everything narrowed towards one date. Spreadsheets, viewings, gutters and floorboards all got weighed for their significant risk of movement, while the marquee-versus-barn question rumbled on long enough to nearly become its own full Skye.

Between the fittings and the seating charts, Gary kept doing what Gary does — eating things he shouldn't, staring at walls, being threatened with a new name that never quite stuck. And at the end of it all, a barn with a leaky corner and a bucket underneath it, which somehow turned out to be exactly the right place.

Married Life and an Aging Gary

December 2024 – December 2025

By the start of this year the wedding was behind them and the ordinary shape of married life had settled in — walks, work, the boiler, the dog. Gary, older now, began to show it: a hesitation on the stairs, a silvering muzzle, a set of tablets tucked in with his food twice a day.

None of it slowed them down for long. There were hostas bought against their own better judgement, a spare room painted the wrong shade of green, Freya's mum inspecting duvets, and a holiday to Whitby that went about forty per cent Skye. Through it all the old shorthand kept doing its job — significant risk of movement, applied to hips and boilers alike, and the running argument over whether Gary should ever, finally, become Kevin.

Won't Do the Stairs

An ordinary evening turned into a strange stand-off with Gary and the stairs.

Owen

Gary's being rather strange with the stairs tonight.

Owen

He just won't go up. I've tried calling him, treats, the works. He's just sitting at the bottom looking at me like I've betrayed him.

Owen

That's what I thought. Scooped him up and carried him, the absolute dead weight of him. He's just lying on the landing now looking tragic.

Owen

I'm serious, this could be significant risk of movement territory.

Freya

not a full skye though

Owen

I'll keep an eye on him overnight. If he's still off in the morning we'll get an appointment. Might finally be the excuse to rebrand him as Bramble.

Whose Fault Was the Stairs

A trip to the vet for Gary's hips turned, inevitably, into a re-litigation of that earlier stairs incident.

Owen

Just got out of the vet's. Poor old Gary's got mild arthritis in his hips, apparently. They've given us these tablets called Rimadyl.

Owen

He's fine, honestly. Mild is what they said. Just going to help with any discomfort. Cost three hundred and forty quid though.

The First-Day Photo

An old photograph of Gary on his first day brought out the tag, the ears, and the same old renaming argument.

Owen

Found this absolute gem going through old photos. Gary on his first day, complete with the laminated tag. Look at his ears.

Owen

I know. And look, you can still read the tag. 'Gary' in proper Courier font. Permanent as anything.

Freya

we could still change it tbh

Freya

kevin

Owen

It's been five years.

Freya

and his muzzle is completely silver now like he deserves a better name 😭

Owen

He's distinguished. Gary is distinguished. That photo proves it - even then, absolute patriarch energy.

Owen

He's staying Gary. x

Five Years and Nine Months

An anniversary of sorts reopened the old dispute over their pub quiz team name.

Owen

Do you remember what our team name was at the quiz? Five years ago today.

Freya

it was the brainy bunch

Owen

That was a different night. Our team name was Quiz Boy Privileges.

Owen

I came up with it. You laughed so hard you spilled your drink.

Owen

So why can't you just look up the photos from that night?

Freya

either way the brainy bunch sounds right to me and im not changing my mind

Freya

anyway happy five years and nine months

Owen

You can't just declare victory and move on. That's not how this works. x

On the Kitchen Floor

He came home groggy from his dental clean and chose exactly where he wanted to be.

Owen

Just collecting him from the vets now. The dental cleaning went well, they said his teeth look better than they have in years.

Owen

He's back. Still quite drowsy from the anaesthetic, just lying in his basket with that confused look on his face.

Owen

Already done. He's stumbled over here and seems to want to just collapse on the tiles. I'm letting him do his thing.

Freya

im on the floor with him

Freya

hes resting his head on my lap

Owen

He's chosen well. You're clearly the better option.

Freya

still here

Freya

hes finally properly asleep

Freya

completely numb but he needed me

Owen

He did. And you're the best at being needed. x

Freya

thats not a bad thing though is it

XII

Still Going

December 2025 – November 2026

By now the arguments have their own shorthand, and the tenderness does too. This year brings the usual admin — insurance renewals, council tax, a dog who has quietly decided he's had enough of the big loop — but it also brings the small unremarkable proof that two people are still paying attention to each other, years in.

There's a full stop where there didn't used to be one. A voice note actually listened to. An old dog earning his afternoons off. Nothing here is dramatic. That's rather the point.

Four Hundred and Thirty Pounds

The vet insurance renewal arrives, and with it a familiar phrase gets a new home.

Owen

Right, I've got the renewal email from the vets about Gary's insurance. It's £430 this year. That's absolutely mad.

Freya

four hundred and thirty

Owen

Yes. Four hundred and thirty pounds. For one cat.

Owen

I know. I've looked at the terms. Apparently his breed has significant risk of movement with their joints or something. It's basically just the insurance company's way of saying he's old and might break himself.

Freya

😭 our baby

Owen

Yeah, we'll have to. Can't risk it if something actually does go wrong. I'll sort it tonight.

Some bills you just pay.

That You Love Me

Owen sends a voice note, and doubts, not for the first time, whether Freya actually listened to it.

Freya

👍

Freya

i listened to that one

Owen

No you didn't.

Owen

What did I say then?

Freya

that you love me

Owen

Oh. Right. Well. Yes. x

Freya

i do listen sometimes you know

The Short Loop

Gary decides the big loop isn't happening today.

Freya

gary is refusing the big loop

Owen

Oh no. Is he alright?

Freya

weve only done about 10 mins and hes done

Owen

Poor lad. Do the short loop instead?

Freya

feels weird going backwards

Owen

He's earned a quiet afternoon. Not everyone can be a spring chicken like us.

Freya

he just looked at me so sadly when we turned round like hed let us down

Owen

He hasn't. He's showing some significant risk of movement just being out there. That's a win.

Freya

true enough.

He hasn't let anyone down.

Kevin Already

An evening ends with Owen pinned by a sleeping dog, and the old renaming argument makes another appearance.

Owen

Gary's completely passed out on my feet. I can't move. This is a significant risk of movement situation.

Freya

leave him there coward

Owen

I've been sat here for three hours.

Freya

just rename him kevin already and be done with it

So far
