The Damp / 'a Graham/Biscuit situation'

Ben's endless flat survey/damp saga becomes shorthand the family uses for any escalating minor crisis, later crossing over with 'Graham situation' and 'Biscuit situation' as universal terms for chaos.

Thermostat War (Graham vs Boiler scoreboard)

Graham keeps an ongoing, increasingly elaborate scoreboard of himself versus the boiler/Diane over turning the heating down, referenced for years.

Holly's timezone complaints

Holly, living in Australia, constantly protests being messaged at absurd local hours, with recurring lines like 'I'm SIX HOURS ahead' and 'it's 4am here so this better be good', persisting comically even after she moves back to the UK.

Biscuit the dog's eating disasters

Freya's dog Biscuit repeatedly eats dangerous or bizarre objects (chargers, paracetamol, tea towels, bread), triggering vet-emergency threads that become a running family shorthand ('don't Biscuit this').

Diane's stock phrases

Diane's repeated catchphrases—'just popping to Tesco, need anything', 'has anyone heard from your father', 'so proud of you all, don't know what I did to deserve this lot', 'not a group chat for arguments thank you'—recur constantly as her verbal tics.

Nana Pat's voice notes nobody listens to

Pat repeatedly sends confusing voice notes and phone mishaps ('I've pressed record I think, hello?'), which family members openly admit they never listen to.

Josh's corporate over-politeness

Josh's excessively formal, grateful messages ('Many thanks!', 'Just to confirm — I'll bring the plates') become a beloved running joke about him trying too hard to fit into the family.

Ben's corporate-speak reports

Ben communicates major life events in bullet points and business jargon ('Nothing to report on that front', 'Noted for the file'), a habit the family teases him for even during emotional moments.

Lockdown Looms, Timezones Collide

January 2020 – February 2020

The year starts the way it will apparently continue: everyone talking over each other, Diane setting resolutions nobody asked for, and Holly somewhere on the other side of the planet wondering why anyone thinks 2am is a reasonable time to discuss life goals. Graham weighs in with the fewest possible words, Ben with the most, and Freya's new dog Biscuit begins his long career of eating things he shouldn't.

By the end of these two months the group chat has found its shape — Diane's Tesco runs and heating bills, Ben's flat search told entirely in bullet points, and a link about a virus in China that nobody quite clocks yet. It's ordinary chaos, the kind that would later feel like the last of something. For now it's just January and February, and everyone is exactly as much themselves as they'll ever be.

Diane

OH NO! Is he alright?? Ring the vet!! x

Freya

chewed through it dad. he's fine tho?? just acting weird

Ben

Define 'weird'. Does he appear to be in distress? Has there been any vomiting? I would recommend: 1. Contacting the emergency vet immediately 2. Providing them with details of what was ingested (plastic insulation, copper wire, lithium battery components) 3. Not waiting to see if symptoms develop - this constitutes a potential foreign body situation The cost implications are secondary to his wellbeing.

she's really typing out a numbered list at 9am on a sunday while i'm literally trying to sleep at 11pm on what is somehow still friday. freya your dog ate ELECTRICITY

Seventeen Photos of a Boiler Cupboard

Ben's flat viewing produces a great many pictures, most of them the same cupboard.

Ben

Right, flat viewing went ahead. First impressions positive. Structural survey scheduled for Tuesday. Sending through photos now.

Ben

1) Front elevation. 2) Hallway. 3) Living room. 4) Kitchen. 5) Master bedroom. 6) Boiler cupboard.

Ben

The boiler cupboard in particular—very interested in that space. Efficient layout. Can you see the condensation pattern on the back wall? That's either nothing or everything.

Diane

Oh darling well done for actually GOING, I know you were nervous! The kitchen looks quite bright. How many photos of the boiler cupboard did you send?

Ben

Seventeen dedicated boiler cupboard images. Also took some wider shots of the utility area but they're essentially boiler cupboard context.

Holly

seventeen. SEVENTEEN. mate that's insane it's 2am here and i'm losing it at the boiler cupboard energy

Freya

JOSH IS HERE!!! biscuit just barked at the phone i swear he knows 👁️👄👁️

Ben

Welcome to the chat, Josh. Three key points: 1) Mum will send links you haven't asked for. 2) Dad has a thing about the thermostat. 3) You are now honour-bound to pretend to listen to Pat's voice notes. All clear?

Holly

Freya

Ben

Freya, I need you to: 1) Take photos of what he ate if possible 2) Note the time 3) Monitor for vomiting/lethargy in next 2 hours. Ring the vet if anything changes. They'll charge £60+ for emergency but better safe.

Diane

Freya ring the vet NOW I don't like the look of photo 7, that could be anything. Better safe than sorry kisses x

Quiz Nights and Clapping for Carers

February 2020 – May 2020

By the spring of 2020 the group chat had a new job: keeping everyone sane. Diane declared 'proper lockdown' the moment the Prime Minister said the word on television, and within days had appointed herself head of information, morale and, inevitably, quizmaster-in-chief. Ben's flat purchase rumbled on in the background, its damp and subsidence becoming the family's first real education in staying calm under pressure — mostly because Ben himself refused to do anything but.

What follows is the chat finding its lockdown rhythm: a nightly quiz nobody could quite kill, a doorstep clap Graham swore he wasn't doing, and Nana Pat's voice notes arriving like transmissions from another dimension. Holly, six or more hours ahead in Melbourne, spent the whole spring being woken up for capital cities. Nobody won. Everybody turned up anyway.

The Damp, Officially Diagnosed

The survey came back, the price dropped, and Ben delivered the verdict in the only register he knows.

Ben

Update: the surveyor's report came back and it's not great. There's significant damp in the basement and some structural concerns. The seller has agreed to reduce the price to £165,000 to account for remedial works.

Diane

Oh Ben! Is that good? Is that GOOD? You sound calm about it which worries me

Graham

165 reasonable?

Ben

Yes. I've run the numbers and accounting for damp treatment, repointing, and a full basement waterproofing system, we're looking at roughly £18,000-£22,000 in works. The price reduction covers that comfortably with contingency.

Holly

so you're BUYING a house with active damp. got it. very british of you

Freya

wait is this bad or is this like when biscuit ate that stone and we thought he was dying but he just needed a walk

Round one was geography, and it did not go the way Diane had hoped — especially once Sydney and London both got a mention.

Diane

Right! Everyone gather round. I know things feel a bit mad at the moment so I thought we might all do a little quiz together. Nothing too strenuous, just a bit of fun to keep our spirits up! First round is GEOGRAPHY. Are we all ready?

Diane

Right, question one! What is the capital of Australia?

Diane

I've already been to Tesco but I think I missed something crucial. Did anyone else catch what he said about the shopping?

Ben

Dad this isn't the time. Mum, I've set up a spreadsheet tracking key government guidance. I can share it if people want to stay updated in one place rather than fragmenting information across multiple sources.

Holly

oh great, so i go to bed in like two hours and wake up to seventeen spreadsheets and a national crisis. cheers for that

Diane

I've decided. We're doing the quiz. Every single day. It's important for morale, keeping everyone's spirits up. Starting TONIGHT at 7pm sharp.

The Damp, The Boiler, and Josh Arrives

May 2020 – December 2020

This was the year the group chat found its rhythms. Ben started house-hunting with the seriousness of a man filing a business report, Freya championed a crumbling Peckham terrace purely on vibes, and somewhere in the middle of it all, the damp was born — a small, ordinary survey issue that would grow into family legend.

Meanwhile Graham quietly waged war on the thermostat, keeping score like it was a test match, and Josh settled into the family the only way he knew how: with relentless, over-thanked politeness that nobody let him forget. By Christmas, the quiz nobody wanted had somehow become the thing nobody could imagine skipping.

Right. Survey's in.

Ben

Not a leak. Damp. Bathroom walls, south-facing.

Ben

Treatment costs between 4-8k. Possibly more if it's gone into the plaster beneath.

Ben

Subsidence concerns flagged near the bay window. Specifically the surveyor has recommended a structural engineer's report.

Ben

There's also a smell in the airing cupboard. The surveyor notes: 'source unidentified'.

Freya

THE DAMP HAS A SMELL. THE DAMP HAS EVOLVED

Ben

The surveyor declined to elaborate on the smell. He's a professional and he declined to elaborate.

Diane

I'll listen to Nana's voice note later. Anyway Ben, you could negotiate the price down surely? Buyers do that. You could factor in the damp cost.

Holly Extends, Ben Gets the Keys

December 2020 – June 2021

The new year brought Nana Pat blinking into the group chat, utterly baffled by voice notes, and Graham quietly declaring war on the boiler. Ben and Josh's flat purchase limped over the line with the damp still very much present, giving the family a fresh running joke to go alongside the old ones. By spring Josh had been formally welcomed in — 'Ben's Josh' no longer just Josh — and immediately began proving himself a very particular kind of family member, all bullet points and 'many thanks'.

Meanwhile, six thousand miles away and several hours ahead, Holly decided Australia wasn't done with her yet. What follows is six months of scoreboards, spreadsheets disguised as feelings, and one poor unsuspecting geography round dragged back from the dead.

SINCE CHRISTMAS?? Graham that's not a scoreboard that's a VENDETTA. And half of those don't count, I didn't "turn it up" on Wednesday the 14th, I merely adjusted it to a sensible temperature so we didn't all die of hypothermia

Many Thanks for the Warm Welcome

Josh's formal arrival in the chat came with an old photo of him as a toddler and a phrase that would follow him for years.

Ben

Right, I've added Josh to the group. He's going to regret this but here we are.

Diane

JOSH!! Welcome welcome welcome!! 💕 So lovely to have you here!! x

Diane

What? It's adorable! Found it in a box at your dad's office, you must have been what, three? 💕x

Holly

LMAO she's got baby pics of josh before ben's even mentioned what he does for work

Josh

Many thanks for the warm welcome, Diane! Really lovely to finally be in the group. Looking forward to getting to know everyone better! 😊

Freya

josh said many thanks lol already fits right in

Josh

I'm not sure I understand the joke?

Ben

Josh, here's some useful context: 1) Don't ask for clarification on jokes. 2) The thermostat is a serious matter. 3) You will be asked about the quiz. 4) Pat only communicates via voice note that nobody listens to.

Josh Reactivates a Wound

Reading back through the chat's history to get to know everyone, Josh found something better left buried.

Josh

Hi everyone! Just wanted to say I've been reading back through the chat history and I think it's wonderful how close you all are! Many thanks for including me!

Josh

Oh! Yes, I was going through some of the older messages to get to know the family better! I found the lockdown quiz from March 2020 and it was quite entertaining! The geography round in particular was a real test!

Freya

JOSH

Ben

Josh. We need to talk about this. Point 1: You cannot like the geography quiz. Point 2: Freya has been complaining about that quiz for nearly eighteen months. Point 3: You have now reactivated a wound.

Josh

Oh goodness, I'm terribly sorry! I didn't realise! I was simply trying to engage with the group's history! Many thanks for letting me know!

Diane

Oh Josh that's very sweet of you! Don't worry about it. Though Ben's right, we should probably not talk about the 2020 geography round if we can help it. Poor Freya! Anyway, how lovely that you're reading back! xx

June 2021 – March 2022

This stretch of the chat is where the family properly settles into its own language. Josh discovers that 'many thanks' will follow him forever, Graham and the boiler go to war over two degrees Celsius, and Biscuit continues her one-dog campaign to eat everything not nailed down. Diane keeps the tea warm, the quiz alive, and the group chat running on caps lock and kisses.

But underneath the jokes, there's a real family looking out for each other — Holly protesting every notification from the wrong time zone, Ben arriving with a checklist for every crisis, and one particular afternoon in March when a text about chest pains turns the whole chat quiet with worry before Graham, inevitably, blames the chilli.

THE DAMP

Ben

Right. Survey results are in. I need to talk through this methodically because there are several issues.

Ben

Graham

how bad

Ben

Not the deposit specifically but yes, significant remedial work required. Estimated cost to be determined pending specialist inspection.

Holly

oh god no. not again. did you keep them all. please tell me you didn't keep them all

Freya

NO. that question was WRONG and everyone knows it

Diane

What is the capital of Kazakhstan?

Freya

you put ASTANA but it's NURZULTAEV NO WAIT. but you CHANGED IT BACK

Graham

it's Nur-Sultan

Ben

In the interest of historical accuracy, Astana was the official name from 1998 to 2019, after which it reverted to Nur-Sultan (2019-2022). So depending on when the quiz was set, either answer could be considered correct.

Good morning everyone! Made a lovely chilli last night for dinner, very proud of it actually, took me ages to get the spices just right xx

Freya

mum that chilli was refusing to simmer properly. literally sat there being stubborn as anything

Freya

it was such a graham situation

Ben

I appreciate the sentiment but I believe that phrase has very specific historical context relating to the thermostat situation specifically. Thermostat situations are Graham situations. Kitchen equipment malfunctions are separate. Just flagging.

Freya

no its everything now. your stubbornness is a graham situation. the cat being difficult about its food is a graham situation

that chilli took 47 minutes. i timed it

The Wedding That Wouldn't Happen

March 2022 – January 2023

For a while, this chat became a countdown clock with no fixed end date. Ben and Josh got engaged, picked a day, watched it fall apart, picked another, watched that fall apart too — barns double-booked, boilers gave up, and every single time someone (usually Holly, eventually Diane herself) couldn't resist asking whether this one was actually happening or just another Ben-and-Josh date.

Underneath the venue chaos, the family carried on exactly as they always had: Diane worrying and organising in equal measure, Graham keeping his scoreboard, the quiz nobody asked for clawing its way back from the dead. And then, quietly, a harder thread appeared — Grandad Ted, tests, results waited on — before Ben finally ran out of patience and made a decision nobody could argue with.

Right! I'm going to need some key information. Have you thought about a date? Summer? Autumn? I can start a spreadsheet tonight.

Ben

We've been discussing late August. We'd like to keep it relatively small, close family and about 40 friends, nothing too formal.

Ben

Right. We need to talk. Just got off the phone with Netherwood Barn. They've double-booked September. We're moved to March 2023.

Ben

I've checked our contract. They're covering the difference in costs. We have options on three dates. Running through them with Josh now.

Graham Wins the Quiz

Christmas Eve, ten minutes to kickoff, and a Biscuit scare thrown in for good measure — then the scoreboard produced its most unlikely champion yet.

Diane

Right! Everyone here? Quiz starts in TEN MINUTES. I've made it extra difficult this year because apparently I'm a 'sadist' — direct quote from Freya, 2020

Diane

GRAHAM it hasn't started yet let me do the introduction— actually you know what fine. Question One: In what year was the Eiffel Tower completed?

Graham

1889

Diane

It's 1889 and Ben that's the kind of energy I do NOT need on Christmas Eve

Ben

Freya given previous incidents this might constitute a 'Biscuit situation'. Advise monitoring and contacting emergency vet if symptoms present. Has she shown any signs of distress?

Diane

FINAL SCORES: Graham 9, Ben 7, Holly 6, Josh 5, Freya 3. Graham has WON. GRAHAM. Has actually WON.

This Is Happening

One more venue scare — a boiler again — and Ben decided he was done waiting for someone else's problem to become his wedding's problem.

Diane

Just had the most LOVELY call from Netherwood about the napkins and — oh Ben, have you got your phone on you? Call me when you see this x

Diane

Nothing's wrong! Well. They say the boiler's playing up again. AGAIN. They've got someone coming but they're not sure if they can promise the heating will be fully operational by June and they wanted to discuss our 'contingency options'

Ben

Right. Okay. Let me unpack this: 1) June is four months away 2) They have professional engineers 3) This is almost certainly fine. I will ring them tomorrow and get specifics but I genuinely don't think we need to worry yet.

Ben

Actually no. I've just been thinking about this and I'm not doing this again. The venue has had three issues in eighteen months. I've spent the last seven months managing other people's problems with our wedding. I'm booking the register office as backup tomorrow. Non-negotiable.

Holly

oh my GOD he snapped

Ben

Already decided. This is happening.

Freya

Ted's Diagnosis and a New Venue

January 2023 – August 2023

This chapter holds the hardest news the chat had carried so far, and the family's answer to it — visits, lasagnes, dark jokes, and simply turning up for each other. Diane told them as gently as she could, Graham deflected as only he can, and everyone else found their own way to say the same thing: we're here.

Amid the grief there was still life carrying on its noisy, ridiculous way — Pat's voice notes arriving like transmissions from another planet, Biscuit testing everyone's nerves with yet another inedible object, and Holly finally, finally naming a date to come home. Ben, meanwhile, kept ticking off logistics in the background, because someone had to, and because that's how he shows he cares.

Holly Comes Home, Wedding at Last

August 2023 – September 2024

Holly landed back on British soil grateful for grey skies and expensive coffee, and immediately declared herself exempt from normal time by virtue of a body clock still stuck somewhere over the Indian Ocean. It didn't matter how long she'd been home — the jet lag jokes outlasted the jet lag by roughly a year.

Meanwhile the wedding limped from disaster to date to disaster again, surviving a double-booked venue, a mountain of napkin decisions, a collapsed gazebo and Graham's ceaseless border skirmish with the boiler. By the time Fenn Hall was finally, properly booked, nobody in the family quite believed a Ben-and-Josh date was real until the deposit had cleared.

Napkins, a Seating Spreadsheet, and Nana's Hat

Wedding planning ground on through vegetarian counts, ivory versus cream, and a hat crisis nobody actually listened to.

Diane

Right! So I've been thinking about the napkins. The cream ones are nice but they show marks, whereas the ivory ones photograph better but feel a bit stiff? I've attached photos. Also someone needs to confirm the vegetarian numbers by TUESDAY because the caterer rang me at half eight this morning and I was still in my dressing gown which was mortifying.

Holly

mate why are we deciding napkin colour at 8am melbourne time is that really something that needs to be happening right now

Ben

Hi Diane, I've reviewed the vegetarian count with Josh and we're looking at: 1. Ben (pescatarian-lite as discussed) 2. Josh (full vegetarian) 3. Mum's friend Carol 4. Possibly Freya if she remembers. So between 3-4, best estimate 4 to be safe. Happy to send confirmation by Wednesday morning.

Diane

Oh Ben you absolute star! That's so helpful. And tell Josh not to worry about being pescatarian-lite, he can just have the vegetarian main. I'm doing a beautiful baked tomato thing that literally everyone eats, even your father will eat it and you know how he is about vegetables unless they're roasted potatoes.

Holly

Right well apparently it's about her hat. She's worried the hat is too much for a wedding. The hat is fine. The hat is beautiful. But now I have to reassure her about the hat.

Ben

Right, moving on to seating. I've created a spreadsheet (attached) with the following logic: 1. Family core at table 1. 2. Mum's friends and their partners at table 2. 3. Dad's mates at table 3. 4. Mixed guests at table 4. Table 5 is the children's table but Freya will refuse to sit there. Happy to adjust based on feedback.

Fenn Hall, June 2025 — This One's Really Happening

At last, a venue, a deposit, and a date the family dared to believe in: Fenn Hall near Ludlow, with Ben's inevitable numbered clarifications attached.

Ben

Hi everyone, we have news. Josh and I have confirmed our wedding date: Saturday 14th June 2025. Venue is Fenn Hall near Ludlow, which we viewed last month and absolutely loved. Full details attached for your calendars. We've now put down the deposit so this is genuinely happening.

Freya

is this one actually happening or is it a ben-and-josh date

Holly

june? june?? thats 3am here mate

Diane

OH BEN THIS IS WONDERFUL!! Fenn Hall sounds absolutely lovely, I looked it up and they do the most beautiful catering!! Have you spoken to them about dietary requirements yet? I'm so excited I could burst. Lots of kisses xxx

Graham

Nice. Ludlow's good. That's what, two hours?

Ben

Thanks all. To clarify a few points: 1) Yes, this is definitely happening, 2) Yes, dietary requirements will be thoroughly managed, 3) Ludlow is approximately two hours twenty from here, 4) Holly, I'll send you the details in Australian Eastern time as well, 5) We will be circulating a guest list by end of October.

Graham

Thermostat's playing up. Might miss the wedding

Diane

Graham don't be daft, you're not missing this! I already know what I'm wearing, have you thought about what you'd like to wear? There's a lovely menswear shop in town, shall we go together? I can make it a day out, we could get lunch after. Let me know xxx

Ben and Josh's Wedding

September 2024 – June 2025

After all the venues that fell through and all the dates that moved, this is the one that finally happens — bookended, fittingly, by two separate outbreaks of damp. In between there's a spreadsheet nobody can quite operate, a Christmas quiz nobody asked for, a dog with a taste for cardstock, and Josh's relentless gratitude turning into the group's favourite in-joke.

What comes through, underneath all the noise, is how ready everyone is to show up for it — Diane colour-coding turquoise, Graham keeping score on the thermostat even mid-cake-tasting, Holly heckling from six hours ahead, Ben issuing calm bullet points through every crisis. By the time the beam turns out to be 'asbestos-adjacent' rather than actually asbestos, nobody even blinks. It's just one more Graham situation to get through before the big day.

Many Thanks, All

Josh passes on the venue's dress code guidance, and the family finds a new phrase to run into the ground.

JoshShared

Hi everyone! The venue has sent over the dress code guidance for the big day. I've attached it below for your reference. Many thanks all!

Freya

MANY THANKS ALL 😭😭😭

Diane

Oh lovely! I'm so glad they've been clear about it. I do hate it when places are vague. Are we thinking that's quite formal then? I have that navy dress from M&S but I'm not sure if it's black tie enough. What do you all think? xx

Graham

It's black tie. Wear black.

Josh

The navy is perfectly acceptable! Many thanks for asking. I'm sure you'll look wonderful!

Holly

many thanks josh for being helpful

Josh

Many thanks Diane for the generous offer! That's very kind of you!

Ben

For clarity: is this one actually happening or is it a Ben-and-Josh date?

Josh

It's definitely happening! Many thanks for confirming though!

Ben

1. Will require transport (myself and Josh) 2. Venue is 45 mins from my place 3. Cheers Diane

The Quiz, Undead Again

Diane revives the Christmas Eve quiz, and the Andorra question rises from the grave with it.

Diane

Right! Christmas Eve tradition time. I've prepared something special for us all to do together this evening

Holly

oh absolutely not

Freya

DIANE NO

Josh

I'd be absolutely delighted to participate! Many thanks for organising!

Diane

See!! Josh is ENTHUSIASTIC. The rest of you used to enjoy it. Well. You tolerated it. Right, first category: Geography

Holly

the andorra question was FOUR YEARS AGO mum

Diane

Oh don't be silly, that was ages ago! I've got brand new questions now. Question one: What is the capital of Portugal?

Diane

It was just asking you to name a landlocked country in Europe, Freya, very straightforward. You said 'um... Switzerland?' and I pointed out Switzerland is landlocked but—

Ben

You were asked to name A landlocked country. Switzerland is, indeed, landlocked. However, the question was specifically about the context of Andorra, and you selected a different country entirely, which was the issue

Josh

For what it's worth, Switzerland is a perfectly valid answer to that question! Many thanks for the clarification, Ben!

The Damp Comes for the Venue Too

News from Fenn Hall brings the family's oldest running joke crashing straight into the wedding plans.

Ben

Right, so the venue just called. Fenn Hall has identified a damp issue in the roof beam above the main hall. They're saying it needs investigation before they can confirm the June date is safe.

Graham

damp?

Holly

it's literally 5am here but somehow i KNEW something would happen. you've got 'damp' energy radiating through the chat

Freya

NOOOO the damp is back!!! i thought we were past the damp era??? 😭😭

Ben

Not panicking yet. Have outlined three options: 1) They investigate and fix within two weeks (unlikely), 2) We move to their October dates, 3) We find a new venue entirely. Josh and I are going to visit tomorrow to assess.

Freya

don't damp this ben 😭 just saying like... this is your final boss damp

Graham

it's a Graham situation

Josh

Ben and I will gather all the information tomorrow and provide a comprehensive update! Many thanks for your patience and support!

Freya

biscuit ate a chocolate coin this morning and i had to call the vet and she's fine but dad didn't even say happy valentine's day back to mum he just posted HIS SCORE

Ben

1. Biscuit eating chocolate is not ideal 2. Mum, did the vet charge a callout fee or was it routine? 3. Dad has been updating the scoreboard continuously since this morning. Graham 44 is a significant achievement and we should probably acknowledge it.

Patricia's Brief Visit

Josh's mother joins the group chat to talk cake and gets rather more than she bargained for.

Diane

Right then! Josh's mum Patricia is joining us briefly to sort the cake tasting — she's only here for the logistics chat so everyone PLEASE be on best behaviour, it's her first time in the group xx

Holly

oh god she's going to see the thermostat scoreboard

Freya

lmaooo she's gonna think we're insane. also hi patricia!! welcome to the chaos 🍰🎉

Josh

Thank you all for including mother! Many thanks for the welcome, Freya! Patricia will be here shortly to discuss the venue's cake selection. Looking forward to collaborating!

Graham

it's not a system. it's a war

Freya

what ben means is dad keeps turning the heating down and grandpa is keeping score lol

Josh

Mother, perhaps we should focus on the cake specifications for now! The heating discussion can be explained at a later date. Many thanks!

Freya

wait come back 😭

Holly

rip patricia. lost to the thermostat. we should warn her properly next time

Diane

Oh don't be silly Ben, she seemed fine! I'm sure she'll come round to our ways. These things take time. Now, vanilla cake — anyone want to vote on the filling? xxx

She'll come round to their ways eventually, Diane insists.

A Baby Named Biscuit's Person

June 2025 – March 2026

After every false start, the second wedding date finally held. The marquee was fixed, the family agreed on speeches (mostly), and Ben and Josh were married at last, with Graham finding a thermostat to adjust even on the happiest day of his son's life.

Before the year was out there was more news to celebrate: a scan photo, a countdown on the kitchen calendar, and by March a new granddaughter. Between the wedding and the birth came all the usual family noise — quiz nights, tap emergencies, and a baby shower drowning in Josh's gratitude — but the chapter belongs to Iris, and to everyone who waited by the phone for word from St Albans.

THANK GOD, In Caps

Word came through that the venue had finally, actually sorted itself out.

Diane

RIGHT. Ben just rang me. The venue have confirmed 20th September is absolutely definitely ON. The marquee repairs finished early and everything is sorted. THANK GOD.

Diane

Sorry that was THANK GOD in caps but you know what I mean. Three exclamation marks worth of thanking God.

Holly

wait so it's actually happening this time or are we doing another 'postponement arc'

Ben

It is genuinely happening. I have received written confirmation from three separate people at the venue. The damp situation has been fully resolved. Josh and I are locked in.

Freya

omg finally??? i was literally just thinking about this and biscuit knocked over a full glass of water like she KNEW and was trying to prevent it somehow

Diane

Freya don't even joke about that. This is happening. THANK GOD. I have already told Carol next door and she is thrilled. I am making a new spreadsheet tonight. THANK GOD.

Freya's Speech Is Locked In

With the wedding weeks away, Freya revealed exactly what her speech contained.

Freya

mine's done!! and honestly it's pretty good

Ben

Freya, we discussed this. You said you were still working on the structural elements. What does that mean exactly?

Freya

it means i'm good actually, very good, no notes 💀

Freya

ok wait so the thing is. it's maybe 70% josh impressions

Ben

I'm sorry, what? Freya, absolutely not. This is the reception, not a roast. We need to—

Freya

no no no it goes HARD though like i do the voice and everything and josh's polite bit keeps getting longer each time and it's actually hilarious

Josh

I— well, that's very kind! I'm quite excited to hear it actually! Though perhaps we might discuss the balance of content?

Holly

josh PLEASE stop being nice about your own humiliation

Ben

Right. Well. I think we need to establish some boundaries here. Perhaps if you could send me the document, Freya, I can provide constructive feedback with specific line-by-line notes, numbered for clarity, and we can work through any areas of concern together?

Freya

Ben

Congratulations! This is wonderful. Assuming this is the news I think it is. Due date mid-March by the scan? We should discuss parental leave policies at some point when you're ready.

Josh

Wow! Many congratulations! This is truly brilliant news! When did you find out?

Diane

200 DAYS. That's how long we have to wait. I'm putting a countdown on the kitchen calendar. I've already started a Pinterest board for nursery ideas. Soft greens or pale yellows? What are you thinking?

Freya

Ben

Mother, with respect, perhaps Freya and her partner should have some input on timing? This might be information they'd prefer to process privately first. Just a thought.

Wedding morning brought a sock-eating dog, a working Zoom link, and, by afternoon, a marriage.

Baptisms, Boilers, and Biscuit Forever

March 2026 – November 2026

By the spring of 2026 the family had stopped pretending anything was new. Holly was home, properly home, with a flat five minutes from Diane's and a body clock that apparently hadn't noticed. Iris got christened. Biscuit kept eating things she shouldn't. And somewhere in the hallway, a war over three degrees of central heating quietly became the longest-running story in the group chat.

What follows is less a chapter than a scoreboard — Graham's, mostly, chalked up message by message against a boiler that never fought back in words but somehow always seemed to be winning. Everyone else just tried to keep warm, keep Biscuit alive, and keep Josh from thanking the group chat for things that hadn't happened yet.

Iris, Christened, With One Eye on the Thermostat

St Cuthbert's got the full family turnout — Diane in raptures over the flowers, Holly dialling in from the other side of midnight, and Graham, predictably, sizing up someone else's heating system.

The thermostat war reached hardware. Diane found the evidence first; Graham found the spare key faster than anyone thought possible.

Diane

There's a LOCK on it Graham. A padlock. Did you install a padlock on our thermostat

Graham

Ben

1. Has this escalation been documented? 2. Should we be concerned about the structural integrity of the heating system itself? 3. Is this a damp situation?
