Margaret, arriving on WhatsApp to be gently teased and fussed over ever since. She keeps to a short, steady set of phrases – the kettle, the lovely photograph, sending love to all – like small, reliable knocks on the door.

You had to be there

"I am not sure this phone likes me" / "I am spry, thank you very much"

Margaret's recurring stock phrases whenever technology frustrates her or someone worries about her health, becoming her signature catchphrases across years.

Nut meg

Margaret's voice-to-text consistently mangles 'nutmeg' into 'nut meg' every time she dictates a recipe, delighting the family for years.

The Rose Photo tradition

Margaret's near-identical annual photograph of her David Austin rose, tracked and celebrated (eventually with a comparison grid) as a beloved, unchanging family ritual.

Nobody listens to Sam's voice notes

A running joke that no one in the family ever listens to Sam's long voice notes, repeatedly pointed out by Ruth and others.

Paul's one-word commentary ('filed under things that happened')

Paul's deadpan catchphrase reactions to mundane or absurd family moments, repeated throughout the chat's history.

Tom's outdated memes

Tom repeatedly posts memes that are years out of date, prompting Ruth to call out the exact year each time.

Voice-to-text recipe disasters

Margaret's dictated recipes are mangled by voice-to-text into absurd phrases ('mashed potato on tip', 'plane flour', 'a nun's worth of sugar', 'to eggs wished lightly'), each becoming its own mini-legend.

Ellie's over-apologetic rambling messages

Ellie's habit of writing long, enthusiastic messages full of exclamation marks and apologies for rambling, consistent across the entire chat's span.

Margaret Joins WhatsApp

March 2020 – April 2020

It began, as so much did that spring, with everyone suddenly at home and nowhere much to go. Ruth added Mum to the family group on a Friday in March, laid down her ground rules, and braced for chaos. Chaos duly arrived — Paul within the minute, Ellie within two, Tom with a gif that was already a year out of date.

Over the weeks that followed, Margaret found her feet on the new phone one voice-to-text disaster at a time, and the family found the small rituals that would carry them through lockdown: the Sunday rose photograph, the recipes dictated a little too literally, the four-minute voice notes from Sam that nobody, ever, quite got round to listening to. It didn't look like much. It was, in its way, everything.

Ellie

Margaret I'm sorry but nut meg?? Did you mean nutmeg?! I'm crying that's brilliant!

Ellie

Oh I think I heard 'nut meg' in there! Margaret do you mean nutmeg like the spice?? That would make so much sense with the spiced cake!

Mum

It IS nutmeg Paul. That is what I said. Nutmeg. I don't know why you're all being so Deliberately Obtuse.

Ruth

Margaret we heard 'nut meg' as two separate words!• We weren't being obtuse!• Your phone was being obtuse.

You Don't Need to Apologise for Being Honest

On an evening check-in, Ellie admitted how hard the isolation had been, and Margaret answered her properly.

Ruth

Right. Evening check-in time. How is everyone doing? Please actually respond this time, not like last Tuesday when Paul was the only one who bothered.

Ellie

Hey everyone! I'm doing... well, I'm doing okay actually. Or I was. Honestly I'm finding it quite hard being on my own down here. I know everyone's struggling but there's something about being completely alone in your flat that just hits different. Sorry, that was a bit of a downer to put on the group! I'm fine really, don't worry about me!

Ruth

Ellie. You don't need to apologise for being honest. We're family. Have you been getting outside at all? Even just to the garden?

Mum

Oh Darling Ellie. This is such a difficult time and you are being so Brave. I have lived through many Seasons of loneliness and I can tell you that what you are feeling is Real and it is Valid. You have always been the most Thoughtful of us and sometimes that sensitivity is a burden. But you are never truly alone because we are thinking of you here and sending our Love across the miles. I am very proud of you for saying so. This too shall pass, my dear, and you will come through the other side Stronger. Love, Mum.

Ellie

I'm sorry, I just need to say - Margaret that was actually exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you. And Paul you made me laugh which I also needed. I'm going to be okay. I promise.

Twenty Minutes Per Pound, Plus an Extra Twenty

Margaret, for once, typed out an entire cooking method — lamb, potatoes, parsnips, all of it.

Mum

I have just put the lamb in the oven at 180 degrees. I am doing it for twenty minutes per pound plus an extra twenty minutes. The Lamb is three pounds so that will be one hour and twenty minutes. I have rubbed it with rosemary and Garlic. Love, Mum.

Ruth

Mother. Have you actually typed out a full cooking method. I have never. In my life. Seen you type this much.

Ellie

Oh this is so lovely! Margaret documenting her roast for us! I love that you're sharing this! Are you doing roast potatoes too? I want to know everything about it! Sorry this is long!

Mum

The Roast Potatoes are par boiled in Salted Water and I have tossed them in Goose Fat with Salt and Pepper. They are going in the oven at 200 degrees for forty-five minutes. The Parsnips need only thirty minutes in the same temperature. I am Spry enough to manage the whole affair. Love, Mum.

Ruth

Right. • Lamb 1:20. • Potatoes 45 mins. • Parsnips 30 mins. • Margaret: SPRY. Got it.

Ellie

Spry Margaret is the best Margaret! I'm so excited that you're all together for this roast! Well, together separately of course! But you're having the same meal at the same time and that's what matters! This is lovely! Sorry for rambling!

Lockdown Rhythms

April 2020 – August 2020

Through the spring and summer of 2020, the family found its shape in small, repeated things. Sundays meant roasts and photographs; the garden meant a rose, taken from more or less the same angle, again and again, until everyone had stopped pretending it wasn't a tradition. Margaret arrived properly into the group chat during these months, phone in hand, catchphrases ready, and the family gathered round her like she'd switched on a new channel.

Parallel to all this ran the smaller comedy of voice-to-text: nutmeg becoming nut meg, lemon becoming Lemmon, castor sugar for the wound. Paul filed things away with one line each. Sam sent voice notes nobody listened to. Ruth kept everyone organised with bullet points. It was, in its way, exactly the rhythm they needed.

Rose Watch and Christmas Pudding

August 2020 – January 2021

Between one September rose and the next, the family found their footing in this strange, housebound year. A tally document appeared, a spreadsheet nobody asked for but everybody needed, tracking Margaret's photographs of the same David Austin rose taken almost the same way, almost every year — and somehow it became the thing that held everyone steady.

There were smaller rituals too, the kind that only exist because a family keeps saying them back to each other: a phone that mangles nutmeg, a meme forever a year or two behind, a voice note nobody quite listens to, a pudding recipe with a good slug of the dark stuff in it. Christmas came again with no travel allowed, so the family did what they could — a screen, a shed with better signal, and Margaret, spry as ever, showing off her garden from a distance.

A Baby on the Way, a Fall, and a Wedding-Sized Gathering

January 2021 – August 2021

This year opened with news that stopped the chat in its tracks: Ellie and Dan were expecting a baby, due in August. Margaret sent a voice note so tender it left half the family in tears before anyone could quite explain why. Through the months that followed, the old rhythms carried on around the new one — Margaret's roses opening a little earlier than expected, her recipes arriving garbled by voice-to-text into things nobody could have written on purpose, and Sam's voice notes going, as ever, entirely unheard.

In May the whole family finally managed to gather in one place long enough for a proper photograph, exhausted but pleased with themselves. Then, in September, everything tipped sideways for a few frightening hours: a fall at the house, an ambulance, and a family finding out — not for the first time, and not for the last — how quickly they could pull together when it mattered.

Right, so Dan and I have some news! We're expecting! Baby due in August. I'm still in shock to be honest, we weren't planning it for another year or so but here we are! Can't quite believe it's real. Sorry for the long message, I'm just buzzing with it all!

Rhubarb crumble. One and a half pounds of rhubarb. Plane flour. Two ounces of butter. Brown sugar. Love, Mum.

It's PLAIN flour. Plain. As in ordinary. Not aircraft related. Honestly.

To Eggs, Nut Meg

Margaret dictated her Victoria sponge recipe rather than repeat it in person, and her phone had other ideas about the ingredients.

Mum

Right I'm going to send you all the Victoria sponge recipe because Ruth keeps asking and I won't be here to tell you in person. Here goes. Two hundred grams of butter. Two hundred grams of caster sugar. To eggs. Two hundred grams of self raising flour. One teaspoon of baking powder. Two tablespoons of milk. One teaspoon of vanilla extract. Nut meg. Pinch of salt. Preheat to one hundred and eighty degrees. Love, Mum.

Right. So we're not using it then.

Ellie

I'm sorry I shouldn't be laughing but the way autocorrect just absolutely demolished this!! "Pinch of salt" is fine and then "Nut meg" like it's some sort of medieval spice merchant!! I can just see it now, going to the market and asking the spice seller for some nut meg!!

Ruth

Has anyone actually listened to one of Sam's voice notes. Ever. I genuinely cannot remember.

Ellie

Sorry Ruth!! But yes I will actually use the recipe, I think it's quite clear what Margaret meant even if her phone has decided nut meg is a legitimate word! Should be lovely. Thanks Mum x

Ken's Illness and Death

August 2021 – May 2022

This chapter opens with small alarms — a fall on the stairs, a fractured wrist, a cast that came off with an accidental line of poetry from Margaret's temperamental phone. Through the autumn and winter the family kept up its usual traffic of memes, voice notes nobody played, and Margaret's insistence, again and again, that she was spry.

Then the ground shifted. Paul's routine appointment brought news nobody expected. Ken grew tired, then unwell, then moved into a hospital bed and finally into a care home called Willowmead. In May, Margaret wrote to say he had died peacefully, with her at his side, and on the very same day the rose bloomed again in its usual spot, as it always had. The family gathered for a funeral built from small, careful choices — a blue tie, white roses, a slideshow finished in the small hours — and when the rose returned the following year, right on schedule, it went on saying, quietly, that some things carry through.

Clearing the Shed, Christmas Traditions

May 2022 – December 2022

Between summer and Christmas, the family kept finding Ken in small places — a sweet tin in the shed, a stuffing recipe garbled by voice-to-text, a chair left at the table. Margaret kept dictating his recipes rather than letting them go quiet, and each one arrived a little mangled and a little more precious for it.

There was room for new life too. Ellie's news in November lifted the whole chat, and by Christmas the family gathered again at the farm kitchen — turkey, trimmings, a rose photographed under frost, and a place kept for Ken. Margaret even began sending voice notes of her own, closing out the year determined, as ever, to be spry.

December 2022 – October 2023

This chapter opens with the kind of news that changes the shape of a family. Ellie's pregnancy announcement set off a chain of joy, vitamins, and immediate baby-name chaos, while Margaret spent the months in between wrestling voice notes into submission — with mixed but memorable results.

Between nutmeg mishearings, a repeated rose photo, and a nine-minute voice note about a fence, the family carried on exactly as they always had, right up until the night in October when everything else stopped mattering. Ellie went into labour three weeks early, and the group chat stayed awake with her, right through to the small hours when Freya arrived.

Christening Cakes and Another Fall

October 2023 – August 2024

Between the autumn of 2023 and the late summer of 2024, the family carried on doing what they always did — dictating recipes badly, photographing the same rose, and mostly not listening to Sam. Freya arrived properly into the group as a small, growing presence, marked in christening cakes and winter garden photographs. Margaret found her voice notes, and the family found new nonsense to treasure in them.

But this stretch also held harder moments — a fall in the pantry that sent Margaret to A&E, and the quiet, practical business of a family working out how to look after someone who insists she doesn't need it. Through all of it, the rose kept blooming, the recipes kept mangling, and Paul kept filing things under things that happened.

Spry As A Nut Meg

An old voice note resurfaces through voice-to-text and comes out sounding like nothing anyone actually said.

Sherry Generous Glue

Mum types out her trifle recipe this time, to avoid another 'nut meg' situation, and still manages to produce a phrase for the family archives.

Paul

Ruth

Mum we discussed this. Type it out or it's a mystery. Last time I got 'nut meg' and we never recovered.

Mum

Oh nonsense Ruth. This one is Crystal clear. I'm making my summer trifle. Sponge fingers, jam, custard, sherry generous glue, whipped cream. Make a note.

Paul

Ruth

Mum. MUM. Are you baking or building flat pack furniture. Sherry generous GLUE.

Ellie

Oh my god no! Please tell me that's what the voice note said! I'm crying this is brilliant! This is going straight into the family lore this is. Sorry for the long message Mum I know you don't like them but this genuinely made my day!

Mum

Eleven Minutes at the Co-op

Ellie records a voice note about a supermarket queue, and Ruth takes stock of just how far the family's standard of complaint has come.

Tom

Ruth

I'm almost afraid to ask. What happened at the Co-op.

Tom

Paul

brutal

Ruth

Eleven minutes. For a queue. And she recorded a voice note about it. Right. The standard of complaining has really evolved in this family hasn't it.

Ellie

I'm sorry I totally overreacted there! Eleven minutes is actually quite reasonable though for a Wednesday lunchtime at the Whitstable Co-op! Sorry for being dramatic!

A Second Pregnancy and Freddie's Birth

August 2024 – February 2025

By the fifth of September, the rhythms of the group were so familiar that everyone could set their watch by them: the rose photo each autumn, Margaret's voice notes at improbable hours, Sam's messages nobody quite got round to, Tom's memes arriving a year or two late. Into that steady rhythm came Ellie's news — a second baby, due in March — and the family did what it always did, which was to talk over each other with love.

The months that followed carried the chapter through hospital results, Christmas Eve, a very ordinary January evening, and then, in February, into a hospital corridor of their own. Ruth's updates arrived in short bursts as Ellie laboured, and by the middle of the afternoon there was a name, a weight, and a great deal of crying — some of it, for once, admitted to.

Some News

On a September evening, Ellie gathered her courage and told the family what she and Dan had been getting used to themselves.

Ellie

So we have some news! Dan and I are expecting!! Baby due in March! Still getting my head around it all to be honest but we're really pleased. Sorry this is quite long but I'm just so excited and needed to tell you all. Can't quite believe it's actually happening!

Paul

congratulations

Ruth

ELLIE. Oh my goodness. This is wonderful news!. • March baby. • Already thinking about knitting patterns. • Will need to know: Boy, girl or surprise?. So many plans to make.

Ellie

Aw tell Margaret I love her! And Ruth yes we're going to find out what we're having in a few weeks. Dan's mum is already quite intense about it all which is... a lot.

Ruth

Right. • Nursery furniture - I have contacts. • Baby clothes - we need to think sustainable. • Visits to hospital - diary planning required. Ellie you'll need support. We'll sort it.

Ellie

You're all so lovely honestly I'm going to cry happy tears everywhere. Dan keeps grinning at me like I've done something clever when really it's just science! Anyway I'll stop rambling now. Night all x

Steady Years, Small Scares

February 2025 – December 2025

By now the rhythms of the group needed no explanation. The rose appeared every May like clockwork, Margaret's voice notes kept coming whether anyone was ready for them or not, and Sam's went largely unheard, as ever. Paul filed things under things that happened; Tom's memes stayed comfortably out of date; Ellie apologised for rambling and rambled anyway.

Beneath the familiar jokes ran something steadier: a wasp negotiated with, a spider caught in a cup, a dizzy afternoon in the heat that passed without lasting harm. Nothing in this year knocked the family off course. It simply proved, message by message, how well-worn and dependable the ordinary had become — right down to the rose, the nut meg, and Margaret insisting, always, that she was spry.

Mum! I'm so excited! Was she able to see him properly? I've been wondering all day how it went with the phone being all complicated and everything! I'm sorry this is long I just really want to know!

Ruth

She couldn't work out which way to hold the phone. Spent the first five minutes showing Freddie her ceiling. Then her ear. Then what appears to be the inside of her handbag. THEN she figured out it was upside down.

Tom

Ellie

Oh my gosh that's so funny! But did she actually get to see him in the end? Please say she did! I'm dying to know if she could see his little face!

Ruth

- She did eventually. Took about seven minutes and a phonecall to me. Which I didn't answer because I was dealing with Tom's washing. - Freddie was asleep the whole time. - She says she's spry enough to work out technology next time.

The Rose Endures

December 2025 – November 2026

By this year the family's rituals had grown their own gravity: the Sunday rota, the rose photograph, Sam's unheard voice notes, Tom's memes arriving years late. None of it needed explaining any more. Ruth still organised with her bullet points, Paul still answered before questions finished, and Ellie still apologised for every sentence she loved too much.

Margaret remained at the centre of it, spry through every scare, mangled through every voice-to-text recipe, and utterly reliable at the one thing that mattered most: the rose, appearing every year in the same spot, same angle, same words. Freddie learned to crawl. Sam found a new job. And somewhere in all the noise, the family quietly agreed they were watching something worth keeping.
